Belbin

TeamWorks is one of few Belbin Accredited companies within South Africa and we use our Belbin expertise as a key tool in the team development process.

The Belbin team roles were developed by Dr Meredith Belbin at Henley Management College. They look at the natural role preferences that each individual has within a team and at how to build/manage successful teams.

Belbin Bureau Service

The Belbin Process

Belbin analysis requires some pre-work (around 20 minutes) from each participant, which TeamWorks uses to analyze and create a document per person that gives them their unique self perception profile. Added to this, each participant needs to get observer feedback from between 4-8 team members. This feedback is anonymous and is sent directly to TeamWorks, it takes around 10 minutes to complete.

The self perception and observer feedback are compiled into a profile that shows the individual's preferences / non preferences for the 9 team roles identified by Dr. Meredith Belbin. The end product is a unique fingerprint of the team role preferences of each participant.

After the profiles have been created, TeamWorks will then lead a session on the effective use of the profile information within the workplace.

In this session we give

  1. A clear explanation of the roles along with the strengths and allowable weaknesses associated with each role.
  2. A clear understanding that an effective team requires role diversity.

In our experience, individuals benefit from their Belbin profile as it provides:

  1. A deeper level of insight into their personal interactions within a team.
  2. The feeling of acceptance that comes from being unique and vital to the team.
  3. A deeper level of insight into their colleagues and why people behave the way they do.

Post the session, the participants will have a shared language that will help them interact more effectively back in the workplace. The team roles are equally relevant at home and at work!

Uses of Belbin Team Roles

  1. Provides personal team role preferences
  2. Diagnoses preferred working styles
  3. Analyses team strengths and opportunity areas
  4. Analyses job compatibility
  5. Provides insight into team and personal interactions.
  6. Analyses working relationships.

The Belbin Team roles are free of any gender and racial bias. Key to understanding the course is that all team roles are valued equally and contribute to the success or failure of the team.

TeamWorks can make this session highly interactive by introducing 9 fun problem solving activities that emphasize each of the different roles in turn.
